Rubella immunity rates in women of childbearing age in an urban teaching hospital

Rubella is a highly contagious viral infection that can cause devastating effects on growing fetus. Although rubella be prevented with the measles, mumps and (MMR) vaccine, some individuals have weak immune response do not sustain an adequate antibody titer to protect against disease. MMR titers are routinely assessed in general population, although healthcare professionals, military workers pregnant women commonly screened. This study aimed investigate immunity rates primiparous women. The authors believed nonimmunity rate would substantial enough justify potential screening all of childbearing age at annual gynecologic exams prior pregnancy. Findings recommend obtaining titer, as well measles when present for their first gynecological visit.
